According to research by Professor William Doherty from the University of Minnesota, a third of people undergoing divorce in the USA sought help from a professional counselor, while 15% turned to a member of the clergy.
Most people preferred to confide their marital challenges to family (brothers, sisters, adult children...), friends and work colleagues. 69% of adult men and 78% of adult women in the USA have received such confidences.
Half of confidants (49%) feel able to help. 40% have experienced stress during such conversations.
As a trained Marital First Responder, you'll be more confident and effective in responding wisely when your married friends talk to you about their marital problems. I provide this training to churches and communities that seek to prevent family conflict and support marriages through natural confidants.
